Middle-East, Africa refugee rule does discriminate - Immigration Minister

From Morning Report, 8:22 am on 27 May 2019

Refugee advocates say the government should drop restrictions in the refugee quota for refugees from the Middle East and Africa.

Under the quota, which is currently up for a three-yearly review, refugees from the Middle East and Africa can come to New Zealand only if they have family members already living here.

World Vision says that means people fleeing from some of the world's most dangerous places have almost no chance of settling in New Zealand.

Susie Ferguson speaks to Immigration Minister Iain Lees-Galloway. He agrees the policy discriminates, in that it treats one group of people differently to others. He says the policy was established by the last government in order to focus on taking refugees from the Pacific.
