Baby uplift 'an annihilation' of hospital's healthcare role - Poulain

A member of the Hawke's Bay District Health Board has described a "mosh-pit of dysfunction" between the agencies involved in the attempted removal of a baby from its mother in hospital.

Board member Jacoby Poulain broke ranks last month and called for an investigation into the stand-off between midwives, social workers and police at Hawke's Bay Hospital.

Three inquiries have now been launched - one by the Chief Ombudsman, another by the Children's Commissioner and one by Oranga Tamariki.

"At the end of the day we're there to provide healthcare for our patients, and what I saw was an annihilation of that," Jacoby Poulain tells Susie Ferguson.

"I saw cruel and inhumane treatment of patients, and all the rights - their legal rights, human rights, patient rights, Treaty rights..."
