Southland council votes against climate emergency declaration

From Morning Report, 6:37 am on 4 July 2019

The Southland Regional Council has voted against declaring a climate emergency, with its chair saying the gesture could undermine the importance of the word.

Councillors instead endorsed a separate motion acknowledging the importance of climate change and committing to urgently develop an action plan.

The council's chair Nicol Horrell told RNZ deputy political editor Craig McCulloch Southlanders are practical people and would rather take action than make symbolic gestures.
