$6.2m pledged to help Māori women facing racism, discrimination

From Morning Report, 8:41 am on 5 July 2019

The government is allocating millions of dollars to investigate systemic racism and institutional discrimination against Māori women.

Māori women continue to have poorer social, economic, educational, employment, and health outcomes than Pākēhā women.

The Minister for Women, Julie Anne Genter, has announced $6.2 million to hire a specialist team that is going to work alongside Te Puni Kokiri and coordinate a government response and participation in an inquiry before the Waitangi Tribunal.

The lawyer for the tribunal claimants, Tania te Whenua, has welcomed the government's approach.
