Top lawyers call for govt-funded cultural reports on offenders

One of the country's top lawyers want the government to fund special reports that help sentencing judges understand an offender's background.

The Ministry of Justice stopped paying for cultural reports in June last year.

It's a move that's left offenders to pay themselves or apply for funding through legal aid but Russell Fairbrother QC says they should be free.

He spoke to RNZ court reporter Anneke Smith.
