Health Minister on Pharmac child cancer drug funding

From Morning Report, 7:36 am on 4 May 2021

The Heath Minister has so far refused to say if he would oppose a move to end blanket access to drugs for children with cancer.

Pharmac is set to make the move, after being accused of discrimination because it won't fund Spinraza, which combats the deadly SMA disease.

The Children's Commissioner Judge Andrew Becroft says he doesn't want to see children with life-threatening conditions become 'bargaining chips'.

Judge Becroft is now in discussions with Pharmac.

The advocacy group Patient Voice Aotearoa is appalled Pharmac is considering abolishing the rule and is calling on the Health Minister to intervene.
