Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts dies aged 80

From Morning Report, 7:55 am on 25 August 2021

Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts has died at the age of 80.

A family statement said Watts died peacefully in a London hospital, surrounded by those closest to him.

It comes weeks after it was announced that he would miss the band's US tour dates to recover from a medical procedure.

Watts had been a member of the Rolling Stones since 1963, when he joined Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Brian Jones in their fledgling group that went on to become one of the world's most celebrated rock bands.

Among those to pay tribute was Ringo Starr - drummer with friendly rivals the Beatles - who wrote: "God bless Charlie Watts we're going to miss you man peace and love to the family".

Music reviewer and drummer Simon Sweeetman is a Rolling Stones fan.
