Former NZ SAS trooper being investigated for war crime

From Morning Report, 8:50 am on 2 May 2022

A former New Zealand SAS trooper testifying in the defamation case of a top Australian soldier has told the court he's also being investigated for an alleged murder in Afghanistan.

Person 35 has been giving evidence in a defamation case by Australian Victoria Cross recipient Ben Roberts-Smith, who's accused of kicking a handcuffed prisoner off a cliff.

Person 35 was cross-examined over the death of an Afghan man during a raid on the village of Darwan in 2012, who he maintains was an armed insurgent he lawfully shot.

New Zealand journalist Jon Stephenson is covering the case being heard at the Australian Federal Court.
