SIS agrees to pay $66k to journalist Nicky Hager

From Morning Report, 7:45 am on 1 December 2022

New Zealand's spy agency, the SIS, has agreed to pay $66,000 to journalist Nicky Hager after it illegally took his phone records in 2012.

The SIS suspected Hager was illegally given information by a member of the Defence Force for his 2011 book Other People's Wars.

In 2019, the Inspector General found the SIS has no reasonable grounds for the investigation.

Hager is pleased with the result, but still has concerns about SIS policies.

His lawyer Felix Geiringer spoke to Guyon Espiner.
