Ardern thanks New Zealanders for their 'love, empathy and kindness'

"Love, empathy and kindness."

That's how outgoing Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern described her overwhelming experience of New Zealanders on the job, as she bows out of her duties.

She's grappled with numerous crises in her five years in office - the Christchurch terror attack, Whakaari eruption, Covid-19 and the recent economic downturn.

Her departure has raised questions over the vitriolic abuse she's endured from some sectors of the population.

But she expressed nothing but gratitude to New Zealanders in her farewell speech at Rātana yesterday.
