Coromandel faces another big dump of rain

From Morning Report, 6:08 am on 1 May 2023

An atmospheric river has brought high winds and heavy rain to much of the upper North Island with Metservice warning of more to come.

Heavy wind and rain warnings are in place in Northland, Bay of Plenty, Rotorua, Nelson, and Coromandel, where up to a meter of rain could fall over the coming week.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand says it has not yet had any weather related call outs.

Northland has borne the brunt of the weather, Kaikohe has recorded 200 milimetres of rain in the past 24 hours. The weather is now moving south and impacting Auckland and the Coromandel.

The Coromandel ranges received 81 milimetres of rain overnight, more rain is expected to fall throughout the day.

Thames Coromandel District Mayor Len Salt says his region hasn't recovered from Cyclone Gabrielle and the forecast is deeply concerning.
