Crews from transport agency Waka Kotahi have been out since first light checking roads across the Upper North Island after a night of strong winds and rain.
Wind and rain warnings are in place in Northland, Bay of Plenty, Rotorua, Nelson, and Coromandel, where roads are described as fragile.
Heavy rain also closed the southbound lane of State Highway One north of Auckland last night.
Despite the weather, a key route on State Highway One - between Waipu and Brynderwyn is still due to reopen today after weeks of repairs.
