Breast screening still failure despite review

From Morning Report, 8:37 am on 15 May 2023

One of the women diagnosed with cancer after breast screening failures in Wellington says they were all harmed, no matter what a review says.

Thousands of women were late for their screening from 2017 to 2021 but a report deemed only ten suffered potential harm as a result. 59 women found out they had cancer.

RNZ spoke to one who was supposed to have a routine mammogram in 60 days, but it took nearly six months.

In a statement, Whatu Ora greater Wellington says it sent written apologies to all of the women and verbal apologies to those deemed potentially harmed.

It says even though the review did not find any certainty about what impact the delays have had, it acknowledged the potential physical, mental, and emotional effects.

It is reviewing whether the woman interviewed for this story will be refunded for the cost of her private treatment.

Health correspondent Rowan Quinn has the story.
