First harvest on traditional whenua in 160 years

From Morning Report, 7:53 am on 27 June 2023

Last year, the Anglican church purchased ten acres at Rangiaowhia outside of Te Awamutu, with the intention of enabling its return to Ngāti Apakura.

The hapū is currently leasing the land from the church, allowing them to harvest from their traditional whenua for the first time in 160 years.

Ngāti Apakura lost the land in the violent attack at Rangiaowhia in 1864, and it's hoped the harvest will be a step towards restoration of the whenua and hapū.

Libby Kirkby-McLeod was at the first harvest.
