Report finds kidney dialysis system needs urgent action

From Morning Report, 8:23 am on 28 June 2023

A new report on the country's kidney dialysis system is warning people could die if the government doesn't take urgent action.

Almost 2000 patients are receiving long-term haemodialysis, a blood-cleansing treatment, but the country's 15 dialysis units are struggling with growing patient numbers, too few treatment spaces, and chronic understaffing.

The report's found some units are getting non-clinical staff to step in or are reducing machine cleaning to fill staffing gaps.

Acting General Manager of Kidney Health New Zealand Traci Stanbury spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.
