Govt urged to ban or restrict out of hours immigration visits

From Morning Report, 7:44 am on 11 July 2023

An immigration lawyer suspects Chinese and Indian overstayers deported using dawn raid tactics are not as well supported as Pasifika communities.

The Government is being urged to consider banning or restricting out of hours immigration visits in law, following an independent investigation launched in May.

The review, headed by Mike Heron, found recent cases of dawn raids targeting Indian and Chinese overstayers, and assessments on carrying out a raid should consider whether the raid is reasonable, whether it's in the public interest and how it will affect families.

Community Law South Auckland's senior solicitor Soane Foliaki says it's hard to talk about dawn raids alone when there is a wider immigration issue that needs addressing. Soane Foliaki spoke to Charlotte Cook.
