High intensity interval training, better known as HIIT workouts, performed in the weeks leading up to major surgery substantially improves patients' recovery.

A new study by Otago Medical School researchers has proven a 56 percent drop in post-operative complications and shorter stays in hospital.

Policy-makers are being urged to take notice of the findings as the reduction to inpatient recovery times would take strain of the healthcare system.

Lead researcher Dr Kari Clifford says the HIIT programmes are safe and tailored to patients' capabilities, pushing them to repeat aerobic exercise to 80 percent of their maximum heart rate through a series of 'start-stop' intervals.
