Deflation hits China

While much of the world is battling with inflation, China is dealing with deflation - and it could have a big impact on New Zealand exports.

In New Zealand, consumer prices have been rising steadily, recently by more than seven percent annually.

But in China, the official consumer price index fell by point-three-percent last month compared to a year earlier, sparking fears of the flow on effect for other countries which rely on Chinese trade.

Anna Fifield is the Asia-Pacific editor at the Washington Post, based in Wellington, and an expert on China.
