Pay equity wait for most vulnerable

From Morning Report, 8:59 am on 11 August 2023

The most vulnerable and poorly paid workers will have to wait the longest for pay equity, according to the Equal Employment Opportunities Commissioner.

The Government's just announced companies with more than 250 employees will have to report their gender pay gap.

But the legislation does not cover ethnicity or disability.

The Human Rights Commission found in 2021 that for every dollar earned by a Pākehā man, Pākehā women were paid 89 cents, Māori men 86 cents, Māori women and Pacific men 81 cents, and Pacific women earned only 75 cents.

The Equal Employment Opportunities Commissioner Saunoamaali'i Karanina Sumeo spoke to Corin Dann.
