Draft COP28 agreement does not mention phasing out fossil fuels

From Morning Report, 7:09 am on 12 December 2023

The new COP28 draft agreement does not explicitly mention the phasing out of fossil fuels.

But the text does focus on reducing the production and consumption of such fuels by 2050.

It includes carefully chosen language steering clear of words like "phasing out" or "emissions".

This is understood to be a compromising clause for countries that want to continue using carbon credit systems.

Guardian reporter Patrick Greenfield, who is currently at the COP28 Summit in Dubai, spoke to Corin Dann.
