A Māori ward councillor says the role is the most fulfilling she's ever had and it's vital that Māori wards continue.

Local Government Minister Simeon Brown announced on Thursday that councils which have recently introduced Māori wards will be required to hold a binding referenda on their existence at next year's local body elections.

But Bridget Bell, a Māori ward councillor on the Manawatu District Council, says her efforts have led to increased involvement by Māori in the council, which is needed.

Bell spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.
