Gun shots fired at rugby team's van in Hastings

From Morning Report, 7:15 am on 8 April 2024

Police are investigating after shots were fired at a rugby team's van in Hastings over the weekend.

A match was abandoned early due to safety concerns, but the Young Maori Party team's van encountered trouble after it left.

The team's coach, Guy Taylor, was in the driver's seat at the time and he said the van was rammed as well as shot at.

He was able to turn the van around and return to Bill Mathewson Park, where he knew there was a police presence.

Police believe the shooting is gang linked.

Hawke's Bay area commander Inspector Lincoln Sycamore spoke to Corin Dann.
