Millions of people across Mexico, the US and Canada will be staring eagerly at the sky right about now, watching for the last total solar eclipse that will pass coast-to-coast across the continent for 21 years.

It is estimated that 31.6 million people live in the path of the eclipse, which is passing over 15 US states from Texas to Maine.

AP reporter Philip Crowther is at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway where celebrations have been taking place all day.

Crowther spoke to Corin Dann.
