Winston Peters tells UN Gaza situation is a 'catastrophe'

From Morning Report, 6:42 am on 9 April 2024

New Zealand's foreign affairs minister Winston Peters has told the United Nations' General Assembly in New York, the situation in Gaza is an utter catastrophe.

In an address this Tuesday morning, Peters said the Security Council had failed in its duties to maintain international peace and security and Gaza is now a wasteland, with another generation of young Palestinians traumatised.

Peters said since the start of the current crisis in Gaza, the veto has been used five times to prevent the Security Council from acting decisively.

He called it a fail by the Council to carry out its responsibility to maintain international peace and security.
