Peter Stapleton started his first band in Christchurch in the mid-1970's. Caught up by the first flush of punk rock, he drummed in Bill Direen's first band, the legendary Vacuum. Later he was both drummer and principal lyricist in key Flying Nun bands such as the Pin Group, Scorched Earth Policy and the Terminals. More recently he has moved into improvisational music and performs and records with several Dunedin groups including Sleep and A Handful of Dust. He runs the Metonymic and Medication labels, and curates the biennial Lines of Flight festival.
