Dusty Spittle was born near Gore in 1939, where he played in local country act, The Mountaineers. In Australia, he established a New Zealand showcase at Tamworth's Country Music Festival and on his return to Gore in the 1960s, he initiated a talent quest for country musicians that became the Golden Guitar awards.
