When punk arrived in New Zealand in the mid-1970s, it kicked open the door of popular music, allowing bold new sounds to flourish. 30 years on, musicians from The Mint Chicks to Coco Solid continue to mutate punk into new forms.Part One of The Punk Genome Project' takes in the burgeoning days of punk music in this country and maps the genes of early punk bands like the Scavengers and The Enemy, streamlined post-punks Fetus Productions and Danse Macabre in the early 1980s, and the unexpected crossover of the punk-inspired Headless Chickens.
