Miloux Live in Session

From RNZ Music, 3:30 pm on 9 April 2016

Miloux is the stage name of Rebecca Melrose, a jazz school vocal graduate. All the training has paid off. Her mellifluous vocal lines drift and scatter effortlessly through the songs on her first, self-titled EP, out this week on Loop Recordings.

Last year she competed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, and has spent time playing in Sal Valentine And The Babyshakes - she's no newcomer to performing. But she's veered off the conventional jazz path, to explore the electronic realm of beat-making.

"When I came out [of jazz school] I realised there were all these amazing new artists, like Purity Ring, Little Dragon, James Blake, I just loved the heaviness of the synths, and the drum patterns, and I just thought - that's what I want to do."

Have you come up against people who assume there's a male producer behind the scenes helping you out? asks host Melody Thomas. "Yes" says Rebecca. "Always. The first question they ask is 'who produced your song'. It's really annoying actually. It's a little insulting to be honest."

Joined by drummer Jared, Miloux performs stripped back versions of 'These Rules', 'Pocket', and 'Holiday Inn'.
