Japandroids on getting Near To The Wild Heart Of Life

From RNZ Music, 4:00 pm on 18 January 2017

Brian King and David Prowse have been a duo for a decade now, belting out heartfelt garage rock anthems that cast an eye back to the freedoms of youth, with a passion that's seen them connect with an increasingly fervent audience.

After a whopping 200-plus shows in support of their last album Celebration Rock, they took a break to write album number three, a process which took 2 years.

"There's an intense amount of refining. Refining the lyrics, and refining the drums and guitars," King says.

Japandroids show an attention to detail that's at odds with the garage rock genre. And in 2017 prioritising quality over quantity is an increasingly rare approach, but it's one that's worked in the band's favour.

As King points out: "Our whole career is based on three, eight-song albums. We are where we are after ten years on 24 songs.

"Ryan Adams writes 24 songs in a weekend."
