NZ Live: Mel Parsons

From NZ Live, 2:20 pm on 23 September 2022

New Zealand singer Mel Parsons plays tracks from her brand new album Slow Burn in our Christchurch studio.

It's the fifth album from Mel, who's excited to be touring the country again after two years of COVID disruption.

Mel tells Charlotte Ryan that she prefers not to talk about the specifics of her song lyrics because she doesn't want to know the specifics of other people's.

"When I'm listening to music I like to put my own meaning on to things. Whenever anything is too explicitly explained it changes the meaning."

She will say that the track 'Tired of Being You' is about her own tendency to "take everything too seriously".

"As artists, we do that sometimes, don't we? At the end it's just music… this song's about me."

Mel is happy that people are connecting with Slow Burn, and the particular success of the song 'Failure' has her thinking she may need to write even sadder music.

"It's great there's other people failing out there as well [as me]. It's just the human condition."

Mel shot the music video for 'Failure' at the Wunderbar - an iconic venue in her hometown of Lyttelton.

She says she loves living in the Canterbury port town and still feels "fairly connected" to the music industry there.

"Lyttelton is a cool community. You can choose to be as much a part of it as you like … it's kind of like living in a small town but in the city, cause it sort of feels like just another suburb of Christchurch, proximity-wise.

"Theres a really cool music scene going on down here. Every time I go out there's some many young cool bands playing. It's really exciting, actually. There's some cool venues and there's a lot of life down here."
