Trail-blazing electro-pop duo Strawpeople have just released their first album in 19 years - Knucklebones.

Back in 1995, Strawpeople won a Silver Scroll for their song 'Sweet Disorder' and in 1997 their album Vicarious was NZ Album of the Year.

Band members Fiona McDonald and Paul Casserly stopped making music as Strawpeople in 2004. Now, 19 years on, they're back with the new album Knucklebones.

Fiona tells Jesse Mulligan she and Paul have been friends for 40 years and catching up at a 50th birthday a few years ago, decided to make another Strawpeople album.

Their signature sound still has a place in the hearts of many Kiwis, she says.

"Ninety-nine percent of the time when someone recognises me from Strawpeople they say 'I travelled around Europe with you in my backpack, I broke up to you, I shifted flats to you'."

In 2018, Fiona performed with her former band Headless Chickens at Auckland's The Others Way festival. Although she came off stage "feeling like Beyoncé", that was the last Headless Chickens gig ever.

Not so for Strawpeople who plan to perform live next year, Paul says.
