But how often do you stop and think about the quality of the water before you jump in?
Every summer water quality monitoring organisation Land, Air, Water Aotearoa (LAWA) publishes and updates the "Can I Swim here?" guide.
The guide provides a rundown of the current water quality at over 800 popular swimming spots. Anna Madarasz-Smith is LAWA's chief scientist.
