Tens of thousands of people fleeing bushfires in Australia

From Summer Report, 8:10 am on 3 January 2020

To Australia, where authorities are racing against the clock to evacuate tens of thousands of holidaymakers before scorching, dry and windy weather returns tomorrow -- worsening the uncontrollable bush-fires in the country's southeast.

More than 200 fires are burning across the states of New South Wales and Victoria, threatening several towns.

New South Wales will enter a week-long state of emergency today, allowing forced evacuations and road closures ahead of what the premier, Gladys Berejijklian, is describing as horrible conditions.

On the Victorian coast at Mallacoota, 4,000 people have been stranded on the beach since Monday night.

The navy will soon begin evacuations by sea -- with people triaged according to their needs.
