Thirty-four New Zealand Defence Force personnel have been digging in on Kangaroo Island, helping their Australian counterparts clean up after bushfires swept through the area.
They've been clearing trees to get roads reopened, producing fresh water and building fire breaks.
While there's been the grim task of removing the bodies of dead wildlife, army engineers have also been able to help those that have survived, constructing feeding stations for koalas at a wildlife sanctuary on the island.
Logan Church spoke to the troop commander for the army engineers, Lieutenant Brad Geen, about their recent mission.
