Tucked away on the Coromandel Peninsula, you will find the 2016 House of the Year.

The clients wanted humble and basic. They also wanted a bunker-like solidity.

It looks a bit old like it's been there for a while, yet it is also very contemporary.

They call it "agrarian brutalism" - and the house is aptly called the Iron Maiden.

Lance Herbst from Herbst Architects designed the house with his wife and business partner, Nicola Herbst, and Jeremy Hansen, editor of Home Magazine, talk to Wallace Chapman about the winning design.
