Adams invited to second medal ceremony

A South Auckland sports club is inviting Olympic shot put champion Valerie Adams to a second medal ceremony at its grounds.

Adams was awarded the gold after Nedzeya Ostapchuk, of Belarus, was stripped of the London Games medal in August following a positive drugs test for steroids.

Adams is to receive her medal at a special ceremony on Auckland's waterfront limited to 2000 ticket holders on Wednesday, causing upset among some Tongan community leaders.

The athlete is Tongan and grew up and worked in South Auckland.

Auckland Councillor Ali Filipaina and the Tongan Advisory Council want a second medal ceremony to be held.

The Papakura Athletic and Harrier Club says the official ceremony is limiting and should be extended to the South Auckland community.

President Tracey Hainsworth says the ceremony would inspire junior athletes and be a memorable occasion for the community.

The club is waiting for a response from Adams's manager.
