Now the MetService long range forecast for all New Zealand to midnight Saturday

The Situation

A low is slowly crossing the North Island, and should be centred off the north Wairarapa coast at midnight tonight. The low moves away to the east on Wednesday, followed by a narroww ridge.

Looking at the weather to midnight tomorrow

Northland to Taumarunui, including Coromandel, Bay of Plenty and Taupo

Showers, some heavy and squally with possible thunderstorms in the west today. Showers gradually easing tomorrow, then becoming confined to the west coast.

Taranaki to Manawatu including Taihape

Rain developing this afternoon, with heavy and possibly thundery falls. Rain easing to showers tomorrow afternoon, then retreating to the high ground.

Gisborne and Hawkes Bay

Occasional showers, easing tomorrow evening.

Wairarapa, Kapiti and Wellington, also Buller, Nelson, Marlborough and Canterbury

Areas of rain, gradually clearing from the south tomorrow.

Westland and Fiordland

Occasional rain or showers, clearing from Westland this evening, but returning late tomorrow.

Otago and Southland

Scattered rain clearing this evening, then mainly fine, but a few showers remain about Stewart Island and coastal Southland until tomorrow morning.

Chatham Islands

Mostly cloudy, light rain for a time tomorrow.

And the outlook for the following three days...


North Island, becoming cloudy in the west from Waikato to Wellington with a few drizzle patches developing, turning to rain at night. Mostly sunny elsewhere. South Island, rain spreading up western areas with heavy falls developing, but only brief light rain spreading further east.


North Island, rain with brief falls spreading east, easing to a few showers. South Island, showers in the west clearing. A period of showers with southerlies spreading up eastern areas.


North Island, showers and southerlies spreading up eastern areas and showers elsewhere clearing. South Island, mainly fine,but showers about Marlborough at first.

And at the Chathams

Cloudy periods on Thursday with southeasterlies dying away. Rain developing on Friday with northerlies freshening. Showers on Saturday with a southwest change.
